Summary : Hope Online Learning Academy Co-Op High School and Renaissance Secondary School are each applying for the CDE Expelled and At-Risk Student Services (EARSS) Grant. If granted approval through CDE’s internal grant approval review process, the schools will engage in the activities as outlined in their applications to CDE. The intent of the grant funds is to provide educational services to expelled students, students who are identified as at risk of dropping out of school due to chronic absenteeism or disciplinary action as identified pursuant to section, and to truant students. This is a highly competitive grant with funds available through the 2021-2022 school year for planning and into 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 for implementation dependent upon state appropriations for the grant. These charter schools are eligible to apply as they do not currently have an EARSS Grant. The District has an on-going EARSS grant at this time and therefore, is ineligible for these particular funds.

Requests for funds for each school are:

Hope Online High School - $90,500 for planning year (21-22);
$162,300 (22-23) and $135,195 (23-24) for implementation

Renaissance Secondary School - $35,000 for planning year (21-22) and $180,000 each subsequent year for implementation (22-23 & 23-24)

For the CDE Expelled and At-Risk Student Services (EARSS) Grant, Board knowledge of the grant application request by charters is required as part of the submission of the application and acceptance of grant funds by the District as the fiscal agent for the grant. CDE will be scoring, approving and awarding the grant application and funds. If the grant is awarded, CDE has an extensive evaluation process in place for the use of the grant funds and related activities.
